Dry Fork Station's Basin Electric employees have set an example to all on site as well as other Basin Electric construction sites in choosing to participate in the OSHA 30 Construction certification.
Basin Electric Power Cooperative - October 14, 2008
The Dry Fork Station site requires all personnel to take the OSHA 10 Construction certification. However, the Dry Fork Station Basin Electric Construction and Operations employees have set an example to all the contractors on site as well as other Basin Electric construction sites in choosing to participate in the OSHA 30 Construction certification.
Joel Dingman, Basin Electric Dry Fork Station operations superintendent, says, “In choosing to participate in the OSHA 30, the biggest challenge to overcome was making a commitment to take the time for the training. We all have very busy schedules in an ever-changing work environment.” The 30-hour in-depth course was conducted by the Basin Electric Dry Fork Station construction safety coordinator, Juls Manville-Bell.
The training course was geared toward topics specific to the Dry Fork Station site, including excavation, steel erection, cranes/rigging, fall protection, scaffolding, electrical and fire protection, 19 topics in total. Hazard recognition training was also conducted, which included a site walkthrough where each employee could use their fresh skills to recognize, evaluate and control hazards.
Dingman says by achieving this certification, the Dry Fork Station has added many extra sets of “safety eyes.” Basin Electric’s Dry Fork Station employees have taken on the responsibility to ensure the Basin Electric Safety and Health Policy, “Promoting Safety Excellence 24/7,” remains one of the highest priorities during the construction activity, and follows through to the operations activities.
“The course would not have been successful without the full attention and participation of all the employees,” Dingman says.
Basin Electric’s Dry Fork Station employees are Tom Stalcup, plant manager; Joel Dingman; Ron Youngs, planner; Doug Ramsey, contract employee; Kathy Manley, administrative supervisor; Juls Bell; and Jim Turman, assistant construction coordinator. In the future, as the work force increases, another certification course will be provided to the employees.
