Other speakers at the conference included Gen. Wesley Clark, a retired NATO supreme allied commander – Europe, chairman of several organizations, and member of the Clinton Global Initiative’s Energy & Climate Change Advisory Board, and Dr. Kristina Johnson, the under secretary for energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.
Rebenitsch’s presentation focused on the economics of wind projects, criteria to consider when locating a wind project and how transmission plays a major factor in the amount of wind generation that can be moved out of the state of North Dakota to areas that need electricity, like Chicago and Minneapolis. “Although transmission accounts for less than 10 percent of the retail cost of electricity, transmission determines when, where and if you can build generation. If you don’t have transmission, you don’t build generation,” Rebenitsch said.
The 2010 Renewable Energy Action Summit is part of U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan’s (D-ND) effort to advance energy production in North Dakota. Dorgan co-hosted the event with the Great Plains Energy Corridor office, Bismarck State College, the North Dakota Alliance for Renewable Energy, and engineering firm Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson. U.S Representative Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) also attended.
