There are a lot of bald heads in Bismarck and a few other communities today, and most of the hair that used to be attached to those heads was traded for money. This is the third year that Basin Electric Power Cooperative has held the St. Baldrick's Day event. The fundraiser brings in money for childhood cancer research.
This is an expensive head. After a quick auction, Mike Eggl traded his hair for $13,000.
"The first time I did it, I was a little concerned about how it would look. After you've done it once, it's no big deal," said Eggl.
This is the third year Eggl has donated his head to raise money, and it's the second year his daughter has donated her hair for Locks of Love.
"There's not anybody that hasn't been touched by childhood cancer in some fashion, so it really hasn't been difficult to get people to participate," said Eggl.
More than 70 people shaved their heads at the main event in Bismarck. There to watch were some of the children the company is honoring. "It makes me feel good inside that they're trying to fundraise," said Alyssa Pratt, who is fighting leukemia
Pratt is a freshman at Central Campus in Minot, and was diagnosed with leukemia last summer. Now, her cancer is in remission. "It makes you feel good that people are supporting other kids," said Pratt.
The event has grown over the years, and several tandem events are held at other locations. Overall, the company hopes to donate more than $100,000 to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, and it's not just money they're raising. They're also raising awareness.
"The people who are raising the money for the foundation are walking billboards for childhood cancer research and fellowships. It's a way for them to do something about a horrible disease that impacts so many kids," said Mary Klecker-Green, Basin Electric.
Several other organizations, including the Bismarck Bobcats, and students from the University of Mary and Bismarck State College also joined in.
Donations are still coming in, so Basin Electric isn't sure yet how much money was raised. Last year, enough money came in to make the Basin event one of the 20 largest St. Baldrick`s Day events in the world.
