Antelope Valley Station

Located seven miles northwest of Beulah, ND,the Antelope Valley Station is the newest coal-based power plant in North Dakota.

Its two units, each rated at 450 megawatts, began commercial operation in 1984 and 1986, respectively.

Because of its location next to a lignite coal mine (The Coteau Properties Company’s Freedom Mine) from which it receives its fuel, Antelope Valley is referred to as a “mine-mouth” facility.

$4 billion energy complex

Antelope Valley is part of a $4-billion energy complex that includes the Great Plains Synfuels Plant and the Freedom Mine. Basin Electric regularly hosts tours of these facilities for member system consumers, school groups and more. Nearly 3,500 people visit the power plant each year.

Antelope Valley was designed to be environmentally sound. Over $319 million has been invested, to date, in capital pollution control asset investments.

  • Dry scrubbers use lime to capture and remove up to 90 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions from stack gases.
  • Fabric filter bag houses capture and remove up to 99 percent of particulate matter. Each bag house contains more than 8,000, 35-foot tall bags.
  • Antelope Valley is a “zero-discharge” facility. Water is used efficiently. The only way water leaves the plant site is through evaporation.

The majority of energy produced at Antelope Valley is sent to a substation near Huron, SD, where it’s delivered to Basin Electric’s member systems.

Adjacent to Antelope Valley Station is the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, a coal gasification facility. The Synfuels Plant is owned and operated by Dakota Gasification Company, a subsidiary of Basin Electric.
